2012 European Year for Active Ageing
We all need to encourage our local MEPs to support 2012 European Year for Active Ageing by signing declaration 48/2011 before 15th March so that it is passed and becomes a reality.
This declaration identifies concrete commitment to promote active ageing and unity across generations by the creation of an Age-Friendly European Union by 2020. In particular, it aims to support the launch of three initiatives in 2012:
- An EU Age-Friendly Environment Network to exchange experiences and examples of good practice
- National action plans on active and healthy ageing
- A Covenant to gather and support local and regional public authorities to promote an Age-Friendly EU
The declaration was proposed by 5 MEPs from the EPP, the PSE, ALDE and the Greens, and has already been signed by 143 Members.
In this climate of persistent economic and social crisis, national and EU policy makers and all relevant stakeholders need to consider innovative solutions to address the impact of the crisis on our ageing societies that are fair and sustainable for all. In this framework decision makers and all relevant people need to work together to create an Age-Friendly European Union that encourages unity across generations and enables the active participation and involvement of all age groups in society. This declaration aims to be a first step towards long-lasting commitments to achieve an Age-Friendly EU.
