Here at Age Concern Slough and Berkshire East our aim is to support older people to stay healthy and active and participate fully in society. We do this by providing help, advice and services to ensure that older people maintain their independence, don’t become socially isolated and prevent them from becoming ill or injured.
But none of this could be achieved without the army of over 300 volunteers supporting us to support the older people in our society. It’s simple. No volunteers, no charity.
Whether it’s helping our befriending service by going to visit an older person that has no family or giving advice in one of our information and advice clinics, acting as an advocate on behalf of someone that may be confused and stressed or working in one of our shops, all volunteers give up their valuable time so that they can help others enjoy theirs.
The huge effort our volunteers contribute within our charity shops, stores and opportunity centres is vital in enabling the charity to continue and build on the important services we offer. To say that volunteers play an important role in the charity would be an absolute understatement.
In addition to the obvious benefits to our clients, volunteering offers a way to have a real and lasting impact on the world, to see and take part in things that you wouldn’t otherwise be able to.
Volunteering can be a fun, meaningful way to make new friends and get to know others who care about the same issues you do. It can also be a genuinely life changing experience. Not only is it a great way to gain practical experience, volunteering can also help you stand out from the crowd and learn practical skills which will make you more desirable for prospective employers.
